YouTube Monetization

Just to let you know I've added monetization to our YouTube account, which means ads are placed on selected videos. The account is connected to the Adsense account, where the revenue we earn from both Google ads and YouTube Google ads appear! I've been doing this with all the preview clips Warner Bros sent to us.

This has been working great so far! Infact some days last week, the YouTube ads were earning more than our sites Google ads!

So far this month we have earned over £19 already! :o (brilliant considering we earned around £23 per month, for the whole month in July and August!)

However I'm careful about what videos I place ads on. I'm only placing them on the preview clips since they are viral news clips designed for the purpose we are using them for and wholly owned content, such as Devall's reviews.

Clips such as the Exodus cut scenes are a no-no as they are copyrighted entertainment of Warner Bros and YouTube might then remove them.... however I did notice some of them have the 'Copyright of Warner Bros' on them, so I'm wondering if WB have had that added to them and are allowing us to keep them up? I'll know for certain if we start seeing ads on them. I know a friend of mine who has uploaded episodes of a UK kids series called 'Rainbow' has noticed her videos have ads (apparently placed there by the company who owns that show, Fremantle Media)

So I won't be shocked if ads suddenly appear on our Exodus deleted scenes ;)

Anyway, I'll update the finances thread with the current Adsense earnings around the 15th September.

Chris here...

Hey Neil, once again this is fantastic stuff! I was wondering why ads had started appearing on our preview clip videos! ;)

If you're talking about the little copyright notice that appears at the end of the deleted scenes videos - it was me who edited those in, when I sent the videos over to Mark to upload! ;) I thought throwing that in there might make WB look a little more kindly on us having them up there, LOL!

I can add a little bit of insight here - more and more what's happening on YouTube is that copyright holders of certain content (particularly music content) allow YouTube channels to host certain material, even though technically it breaches their copyright, but instead stipulate that YouTube add adverts to the videos which, when clicked, sends money to the copyright holders of the material. It's kind-of a "If you can't beat them, join them" scenario! ;)

It's more prevalent with music than anything, but folks with YouTube channels still have to be careful - some record labels / music publishing companies still refuse to allow their copyrighted material to be featured on YouTube, and if a YouTube channel gets three copyright claims made against it then YouTube will delete it, I've known people that this has happened to. :(

One of the worst offenders is the record company of the rock band The Eagles - two musicians who'd never met and lived on opposite sides of the world collaborated via the Internet to create a stunning version of "Hotel California", and this video generated over 1 million hits before YouTube were instructed to take it down because of copyright violation! :(

But yeah, I would say that we should be OK with those "Exodus" videos, I think really what WB would be after would be things like full episode downloads and stuff like that. And obviously if our YouTube channel is generating funds for the site then that's very good news indeed! You're really on the ball right now, Neil, brilliant stuff!

Take care... :)
