That's because collectors are perfectionists. It's not that they were disappointed in an absolute sense. It was a relative reaction. The intent was to persuade Mattel to up their game. So, in the eyes of collectors, the Mattel toys were like 8.5/10, but we wanted 10/10 toys. Now, with the new show....it is so far off the mark that we, as collectors, are experiencing an existentialist crisis. Even if the toys are toon accurate to TC Roar, they would receive a 1.5/10 (by default considering that the art style is basically doodles). There is a sliver lining, though. This show might generate interest from 3rd party toy manufacturers. We may get more classics interpretations from companies like, Hybrid Metals, Hiya, Kotobukiya and NECA. Possibly, even 4H (for fans of that style).

I keep seeing the argument that Thundercats Roar is for kids. Weren't we kids when the original came out? How about Voltron, Transformers, GI Joe, etc ? Why are today's kids insulted with such brain dead stuff? Why is everything a comedy or a parody? The real world is a very ugly, tough place. I learned a lot from those 80's cartoons about loss, valor, bravery, loyalty, etc.. I learned how to deal with life as an adult from watching characters on TV/movies deal with difficult situations. From what I've been seeing/reading there seems to be a plethora of cartoons already in the vein of this new Thundercats series out there. Aren't we short changing these kids now a days by continuing to feed them this type of "entertainment?"
I'm in my mid thirties but my GF is much younger than me (mid 20's). I can tell you her generation is much less prepared to deal with real life than my generation ever was. She has a lot of friends that are in their mid 20's that are still jobless, living at home, no ambitions or goals. And if you bring this up to them (to try and give them some tough love), they get very butt hurt about it all. They seem very ill equipped to deal with real life and I worry that the entertainment they are being fed is having a hand in this.
As kindergarten as this new incarnation of Thundercats seems, I seriously hope it deals with real issues such as loss, failure, learning from your mistakes, etc. It seems that we are seeing more and more issues with young persons acting out in violence because they simply didn't know how to deal with life.

To everyone that keeps saying "we were kids when the original came out", Yes. Yes we were. But kids today (the majority of) are not into the same things that we were into when we were children. Much like we were not into what are parents were into when we were children. Times change. Mass opinion, appeal and styes changes with time. When i was 8 years old and would have watched Howdy Doody, i thought it was the dumbest thing I had ever seen. But you ask my Dad that was the best show on TV when he was a kid and he loved it. To Cartoon Network and WB's credit, in 2011 (7 years ago) they brought back Thundercats in a very expensive way creating a show that dealt with loss and other very mature subject matter for children. The animation style thy used then was more fitting for the times. Originally, people hated it when seeing. The show came out and many people loved it. We can point fingers all day as to why it was canceled because yes, mistakes were made all across the board from time slot changes, to lack of promotion, to poorly made toys. Whatever we want to blame, the show didnt make money. Thats what these companies are concerned about. The rating weren't high enough to justify the production costs and the toys didnt help recoup money. Children were given a chance to like a show with more depth and better art work, and they did not. What did they like? Cartoons like Adventure Time, Teen Titans Go, Amazing world of Gumball, Steve Universe, these are the shows that kids like, for whatever reason. Its just what they are into. We as 30 + yr old can complain about this but its not changing. Much like our parents didnt understand why we liked the shows and music that we liked we are destined to not understand or like the shows and music our children and younger generations like. We live in a society/culture were kids are given trophies for participating, people are "sue happy" and point fingers at everything being someone else's fault, and evreyone is offended by everything. Major companies have to factor that in when making things and to avoid lawsuits, they stay on the safe side and leave things out that people can sue them for. When you take the drama out or the "beheading of major characters in retaliations for mass murder of lizard children" which results in emotion trauma for the "participation trophy" generation who need "safe spaces", we are left with one option: happy, silly, goofy, comedic stories and writing. We can complain about this all day and night, which many will, but this is where society currently is. It's no longer 1985. Times have changed and things are different. We can accept that or we can be negative and complain and sound like grumpy old men and women. No matter what would be released, not everyone is going to like it. Personally. id rather see them take chances with the franchise and at least keep trying than to see it lie dormant which means absolutely nothing new coming out for it until it is eventually forgotten about by everyone other than die hard fans like us, that actually come to sites and message boards for a cartoon that aired over 30 years ago. Not everyone is going to feel this way. Everyone has their own opinion. But this cartoon is not going to take the joy out of what the original series or the 2011 series brought to you/fans. It may just bring that same joy that you felt for those series to younger generations that this is meant to appeal to.

Then why Netflix's Voltron used the original recipe, goes to 5th season with huge success and pretty much even blows the 80s show away?

Because Netflix is very much different than Cartoon Network. 1. Different target audience. 2. Being on cable CN has to adhere to different standards and practices than that of Netflix which is huge. The 2011 Thundercats did try using the original formula...expensive animation, episodic and compelling story telling with episodes that had morals to learn from, and having toy line accompany the series to help bolster profit... and it failed. That is what everyone is looking over. They DID try. It didnt work. So, now they are trying to exact opposite and seeing how it goes. If the 2011 Thundercats series was originally on Netflix and not CN, it may have had a different outcome. But unfortunately, it did not.

Just to make this clear I wasn't born when the thundercats cartoon first aired. I didn't even have cable when toonami aired it on cartoon network. I came across the show in 2016 when i watched the original and the remake in the same amount of time. I do know that if Ii had come across this reboot first Ii wouldn't want anything else to do with it. The claim that kids today are different from back then kind of insults the intelligence of today's kids. My 12 year old nephew actually really enjoys the very first transformers cartoon. You know generation 1?
There seems to be an underlying implication that kids today wouldn't be able to enjoy or understand tings from when some of us were kids. I don't know. He also enjoys the original batman cartoon from the 90s. The one I watched as a kid.
I'm probably going to be ignored for saying this but don't sell today's kids short. If shows with underlying themes and good stories were not for today's kids animated disney films wouldn't exist anymore and while my little pony friendship is magic uses the flash animation style that I'm not too fond of it's actually a well written show and now just a sad brainless parody and look at how many seasons it has!
Maybe it'as just cartoon network's executives who believe today's kids only like stupid cartoons with mindless "humor" every single moment. But let's be real. While steven universe has a dogawful art style it also has more mature themes too it. I know CN's favorite cash cow is shoving teen titans go down the throats of kids nearly 24/7 but they are only selling themselves short, failing to realize that kids shows even today do NOT have to just be dumb "humor" and memes.

I will strongly disagree that the previous series failed because it had a serious tone. The reboot had more or less all the potential that was needed but i feel like it received no support from the companies behind it.
TC 2011 failed, in my humble opinion, due to the following reasons:
1) Close to zero promotion. Throughout the broadcast, the show received minimum advertisement, while the majority of people outside TC forums and other strong fanbases, discovered the reboot AFTER it was already canceled!
2) The viewing schedule was a mess. Random gaps (including a huge one), constant time slot switches... the series was literally toyed with!
3) The series was amazing by all means but the storyline begun losing quality after the 13th episode. Panthro lost his arms and turned into a comic relief character, while everything had an "off" vibe in comparison to the first half of the series. Even the plot-twist in the end felt like it was a last minute shocking descision!
4) The toyline had some severe QC issues, as well as terrible logistics. I remember looking between lots of the same carded figures in order to find ONE without serious paint defects. Also, most shops kept receiving huge numbers of a random character instead of a variety while certain figures and sets were extremely rare. Both issues weren't the case with Ben 10 also released by Bandai during the same time.
5) The video game was developed for a system that was already off the market (Nintendo DS)! It made no sense whatsoever to release it for a dead handheld instead of, at least, mobile phone platforms which were already a thing back in 2011/2012.

well CN did have a rather amusing commercial for the 2011 thundercats about mumm-ra not being invited to a party or something. I cannot seem to find the commercial on youtube though so...
I have already given my long list of 2011's thundercats good and bad but in all honesty I'd rather they just make a season 2 of that over this dumpster fire. I'm gonna call it now. This show will be the metroid other M of the series.

I think the reason why many fans are so upset by this incarnation is because we didn't have any closure with the 2011 reboot. Yes, there was a lot of problems with the show's writing and direction towards the end, and the toy sales were a daft at best, but many of us were honestly hoping for something a little bit more dramatic in terms of storytelling like the Dark Horse comics, or what little we got in the 2011 series.
Maybe not make it full-on Avatar: the Last Aribender, but maybe like Young Justice before THAT got canned because not everything should be whimsical.
ThunderCats is not Steven Universe, or in this case, Teen Titans Go, which was genuinely my very first impression, regarding this.

^ at least steven universe does have some more serious themes in episodes. I don't think that show ever had an episode where people wiggled their butts in someone's face and farted.

It's a nonsensical argument in my opinion. Sure today's kids are bit, for lack of a better term, "ADHD-ish" but it doesn't mean they have the aesthetic/artistic taste of a vegetable. Of course, it wouldn't make sense to label this as "for kids" because most kids today don't recognize the TC brand. The TC brand is suited for nostalgics (no negative connotation is intended here), primarily. Yes, Rise of the TMNT has a similar aesthetic, but we have to remember that TMNT never left. It will still build on the momentum of the previous iteration, and so forth. Ironically, this Amazing World of Gumball style is best suited for adult humor (e.g. The Simpsons, South Park and Family Guy). And no, the 2011 TC was not a failure or a practical model to gauge interest for the future of the TC franchise. There was a lot of mismanagement on the part of Cartoon Network/WB/Bandai. If it was released today, preferable on Netflix, it would eclipse Voltron: Legendary Defender. I am assuming She-Ra will also go in the same direction as Voltron, as far as aesthetics is concerned, and I certainly hope so, as should any artistically inclined individual.

Steven U does have some serious themes to it. -I am hoping we get a bit of that, here, too despite the character redesign.

Agreed! -As I've pointed out before; fans are upset because there was no closure with the reboot Dan Norton worked on, all those years back. If we had gotten a revival of the 2011 series, I'd have been elated, in all honesty. Sad that no matter how many petitions fans sign to get something revived, it won't phase network executives.

It feels lopsided, juxtaposed, and bastardizes something loved by many. -That's like if I did this to the Dragon Ball franchise, and coughed out a meant-for-YouTube Flash animation, and call it Dragon Ball Evolution, and have Goku pass gas, after having eaten the mountain lion he barbecued.

Got it (and I think you're right). Thanks for the clarification. The fact it is on that guys wall gives me hope though that they do include characters like the Lunataks. Even if I'm not a fan of what I am seeing, there are so many characters from the Thunderacats universe that are badly needing some love.
I wholeheartedly agree with this! Thundercats has such a rich and diverse cast of characters that I would really enjoy seeing re imagined!
