Proposal for spam management

I can take U-W on as well...I don't see those letters as being as active as my other section, which will be nice with the going back to work issue and all :)

So I started pruning U and found this interesting account:

It's an older member but one if, he had joined recently, I would have deleted as spammer potential due to several markers in his profile. However, he did end up making posts that weren't spam per se, but they were bizarre...rambling, a little nonsensicle and seemingly never in the topic appropriate thread. However, he did mention Thundercats in his posts. huh....just trying to figure out if he was up to no good what his game was. He doesn't even have sig spam!

His profile is suss so nuke him ;) Can't believe he escaped under the radar! :rolleyes:

I got a trio of accounts that set off my spam alarms:

GoldBet
goldbetit
goldbets

All three have gmx.com for an E-mail provider and 2 of them are in a user group called COPPA. I am thinking nuke 'em and be done with it, but figured I'd see what others think as there is no signature to go by.

Ill take K-O for now...Ive been a bit busy the last couple of days with major school work but I can take the time this weekend to prune those.

why was i banned? i just joined like a week ago. i never even posted 1 message yet. i'm not trying to fight it, if i'm banned then i'm banned i just would like to know why if possible.

I tried to unban him, but I think his name was deleted when MannyC deleted all the banned accounts. I'll email him and tell him to just re-register :)

Please let him know that we are really sorry for this, and that Ill be looking out for his screename to show up. Let him know that we did the banning by mistake

MannyC - thanks for offering your help. I think someone else is already doing that section though. I'll post who's doing what now as a recap of sorts:

Edit: It seems to be paying off so far. This morning there wasn't any spam posted on the board as compared to in previous days, there's been a few that have gotten through. I didn't have but a few new accounts in areas I'd already pruned to ban. So that was quick and easy to check. I also noticed, before we dumped all the banned members, some accounts logging in but thanks to their pre-emptive blocks, couldn't do anything :D I'm glad we're purging them completely too, because some accounts I banned had links to porn sites etc and that's not something you want lying around even in a profile, for a youngster to stumble across.

And given all the accounts we banned in the last week, if we only got 2 legit people, that's not too bad! Hopefully they'll join back up and all will be well! Starting to think we can win this war against the spammers and still keep the registration easy for actual fans. Yay!!

Purrsia, aero thank you very much for showing me the ropes, i think i got the hung of it. Finally, i understood how to properly ban Spammers!:eek: It does take a while though!

I banned K-O and part of P-T, specifically P-R.

I believe we should inform our New members to use names with some sort of a meaning instead of 'aegsghasg' or 'Makutla' and maybe use an Avatar too, that will help us out a lot when cleaning the registry from Spammers

The only issue I see with giving that kind of heads up is that smarter spammers could use it to learn how to fool us into letting them stay long enough to post spam.

True. Once we get used to spotting the typical spammer, it'll get easier. Likewise, once the bulk of them have been cleaned up, keeping up with it will be easier too.

avatars aren't always a fail safe - many of the spammers upload one though they are usually a lot smaller than most and pretty random.

If he is legit, sorry. But he does set off some red flags...

mcss - I've banned that guy before too. He's an insistent one, ain't he?

Lordore - please check as often as you can. I try to shoot for at least once a day, which doesn't take long after you do the initial cleaning out of built up spammer accounts in the assigned section. But I know people have their lives outside modding this forum, so if you can't check that often it's fine. Thanks!
