Having moved to Washington, D.C. to take on a federal job, I had always figured that my job would be safe. I mean…If the government runs out of money, they can just print more right? Plus with bailouts of General Motors, A.I.G. insurance, etc. I thought I would be in the clear. Well, as it turns out, I might be furloughed as a part of the government shut-down that’s supposed to take place Saturday the 09th at 12:01AM. Now the part that really bothers me is that I’m an essential employee. What that boils down to is I will be expected to show up to work on Monday morning and do my typical duties as assigned, but not be paid until a continuing resolution (CR) or fiscal budget can be settled. The last major government shut-down took place in 1996 and lasted approximately 21 days. To make matters even worse, the District is one of the most expensive areas to live in the country and I’m already living paycheck to paycheck. If I am furloughed, my rent will still be due…My electric bill will continue to need to be paid…My car note will need to be paid…etc. It’s not like I can call the electric company and tell them I’ll get back to you on that payment. What bothers me even more is that if I were to tell the IRS that the taxes I owe them would be a little late due to the wife and me not being able to figure out a budget yet, I would be penalized if not arrested for tax evasion. Yet the leaders of our country being immature and greedy will lead to thousands of employees not being able to put food on the table. Sorry for the rant, but it’s the SOL predicament that I find myself in. Now if a CR is passed tomorrow, all that it means is another two week extension. So because of the uncertainty of my immediate future, I’m selling off some possessions I received as gifts. I also want to extend my condolences to others who find themselves in the same situation, whether it be federal, state, county, or city. We’re all suffering together.
