Does anyone own one of these "extra value" Tongue-a-Saurus with the free figure? was this included in the box, or a mail-away? was it actually Safari Joe?

I've not seen that before.
To me, it looks like a sticker added by a store. Maybe they added the sticker, then shrinkwrapped a random figure to the box? Probably from when the line was losing popularity, they may have done it so that the only way to get the figure was to buy the more expensive Tongue-A-Saurus.
But that is just my guess based on the picture.

I think you may be on to something... i.e. Store Exclusive.
I have seen many of these in the past ( Mostly Kay-Bee Toys) where they took Star Wars Collectors Cases and shrinkwrapped figures on the side. They did them with the Star Wars Dewbacks as well.
Sometimes, the toys can be found with yellow and black tape wrapped around them reading "managers special."
Would love to know more-

I'm sure in the past I'd seen these (believe it or not, I'm sure it was actually a Rainbow Toys release!) and that release did come with a Safari Joe figure inside the box (however without his rifle)

I have never seen a Rainbow Tongue-A-Saurus...that would be at the same level as the Rainbow Thunderwings Lion-O (with weapons and light up eyes)

I wasn't tracking this either. Wonder if this one (Manny's old one) is a rainbow? the picture is to small to see.

I think it was store specific and not a distribution specific special (LJN/Rainbow) in the Larger picture, you can see this is a Rainbow piece but the box still clearly says "No figure included"

It would be very interesting if someone could confirm which figure was included with the Extra Value Tongue-a-Saurus. Was it Safari Joe or Captain Shiner or another figure altogether?

This is a bit unrelated but I remember around 1990 a shop here taped various Master of the Universe figures to Infaceables vehicles, to help get rid of them. I got Mantenna with the Horrible Hammer.

I know what you mean, Mark M. I've seen a number of toy shops employ that tactic. In fact I remember vividly that one store owner took some TMNT stickers and was putting them on items that were not selling like plastic lunchboxes , making them TMNT lunchboxes and they would just fly off the shelf! This was back in the early 90's when Turtlemania was in full force. :) I'm guilty of buying one of those lunchboxes myself! LOL! :D
It is kind of ironic that back in the 80's, the shop owners had to use this tactic to sell the Tongue-a-Saurus and now, it is one of the most sought after expensive toy in the Thundercats line!

Tongue -A-Saurus is the only Thundercats toys I do not recall seeing in any of the toy shops here in the UK. I didn't even know it existed until a few years ago.
