Backing up the new version of the site? :)

Hi gang,

Just a quick question regarding the new version of the site we're all working on, important enough that I felt it merited its own thread! :)

I'm basically just wondering, is it possible to back up all of the WordPress-generated pages we're creating, and if so, how does one go about doing it? :) I think we would all be absolutely gutted if, for example, Hostmonster's server were to go offline and we ended up losing all this hard work and having to start again from scratch... :(

I'm guessing that there is a way that all this stuff can be backed up and saved, as otherwise Content Management Systems like WordPress, Joomla, etc., would never have taken off because they'd be too unstable - but, it would put my mind at rest if MannyF or someone in the know could confirm this for me! :)

...And, if it is possible to back this stuff up, I'd love to know how to do it so I could do it for myself as a double fail-safe. Again, if MannyF or someone could LMK, that would be fantastic - many thanks! :)

Take care... :)

I think Hostmonster backs up everything uploaded to the webspace as part of their hosting service from what I remember.....

Although can't you save each page as a file on your computer as well as uploading to the site?

No, you can't, at least not that I'm aware of - the reason being that the pages are created by inputting code / content into an interface and you then click "Publish" to upload it, so it's not like creating an HTML page using Notepad and uploading the finished page via FTP.

The best analogy I can give you is that you add a page to the new site the same way you add an auction to eBay - eBay is also powered by WordPress. :)

Hope you're right about Hostmonster, although if there was a way to back the site up to someone's hard drive, that would make me feel even better! :)

OK, bit of an update here - having done a bit of research, and thanks to MannyF letting me have Admin access to the WordPress site, I've been able to perform a complete backup of the new version of the site! :)

I'm not actually able to back-up the MySQL database the way WordPress tells me to do because it would require me to access the actual site hosting, which I believe only MannyF can access - the reason for this being that I would need to access cPanel and from there PHPMyAdmin in order to do so...

However, there is a handy-dandy WordPress plug-in called wp-db-backup that you can install which does the heavy-lifting backup of the database for you, so the actual (HTML) pages themselves, each of which is saved as an entry to the database table, get backed up to an .sql file, which you can have saved on your computer or to your server (I choose my computer, or specifically my external hard drive). :)

However, this doesn't include any of the WordPress theme content (logo, CSS file[s], etc.), or any of the actual images that have been uploaded to the site via the WordPress uploader - fortunately, all of that is accessible via FTP, and so I've downloaded all of that too! :)

I must confess if we ever had to do a "system restore" from these files I've saved I have no freaking idea how I'd go about doing it, LOL! However, we can cross that bridge if and when we come to it! ;)

Just to let you guys know that today I performed a full back-up of the WordPress content of our site, via FTP and also backing up the database via the above-mentioned plugin. I really should do this more often, but, better late than never I guess! :D

I might do a back up too via the Cpanel :)

A smart plan, Neil - also, is it possible to do a backup of the forums from cPanel as well? I believe the forums are powered by a MySQL database the same as the WordPress side of things is. :)

I'm not able to run a backup of the forum, so if you were able to back it up at your end, I reckon it might be worth it - what do you think? :)

All done. There is more than one wordpress database it seems! (I just downloaded all of them! lol)

That's brilliant, Neil, thanks so much!

Yeah, I must admit I have virtually no idea how we would perform a "system restore from backup" if we ever needed to - I guess we'll cross that bridge if we ever come to it! ;)

It's easy to do within the Cpanel ;) I saw where you upload the file too, when I downloaded the backups.
